Free ebooks.

Free. Free. Free. I like things that are free: Quicksilver, Adium, Firefox, podcasts, and a couple of more stuff. At Baen Free Library (there's that word again: free), they offer free downloads of books in several formats like HTML, rich text format, Rocket EBook, etc. The free library was, as according to science fiction writer Eric Flint, "a byproduct of an online 'virtual brawl'... with a number of people, some of them professional SF authors." Look upon the site as a manifesto of sorts by an author who is out to prove some people wrong about their views about piracy and how it should be handled. Check out Baen Free Library if you are interested in the science fiction and fantasy genres.

Mac 101: Scroll wheel and new switchers

Posted: | | 0 comments

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) shows four tips on how to use your mouse with scroll wheel with your Mac. With the scroll wheel you can make your screen zoom in or out (control + scroll wheel) or scrolling horizontally on apps like Preview by holding down the shift key while scrolling the wheel up or down. Check out Four Fun Scroll Wheel tips at TUAW.

In the meantime, Macinstruct has their Indispensible Tips to New Mac Users, a set of tips aimed at those were Windows users who decided to switch to the Mac. The tips cover Exposé (you really need to know this, newbies), spring-loaded folders, customizing the Finder window toolbar, cleaning your desktop of icon clutter, and others. Macinstruct is a good source for Mac newbies as well as for advanced users. So check out their other how-to's and guides.

Last but not the least, for those advanced users out there who likes using Quicksilver, Coffee blog, has a tip that mashes up Quicksilver with your Mac's active screen corners. Haven't tried this myself but looks like one cool hack. Unlike the author, I'm a proponent of knowing how to navigate using just the keyboard.

That's it for now. I'll be writing something explosive in the next few days, and it's not because I ate a lot of fajitas and enchiladas.

Davao underwater

Tonight there was a sudden downpour that lasted a little bit more than an hour. The deluge was enough to flood the streets of Davao though.

When the rain stopped, the flood cleared up after a couple of minutes. Other parts of Davao wasn't that quick to dry up though.

Egoogle trip

I know some of you have done this: googling for your name and see what comes up. I've googled "Jaime Haw" and came up on top of the list. "Jaime Haw" with the quotation marks gave me the top four slots. Googling for "jimhaw" however, resulted in the top ten finds. How's that for an ego trip. (Google did ask whether I meant "jigsaw" instead of "jimhaw.")
