I've had the unfortunate experience of having my Powerbook's power adapter literally going up on smoke on me. What happened was that the wire inside the cable got frazzled because of the repeated winding and unwinding of the cable. One day I started hearing buzzing or cracking noises and a little after that, burnt rubber permeated the air. Needless to say my power adapter's cable was toast.
Avoid what happened to my power adapter by taking a look at Apple's support document "Reducing cable strain on your MagSafe power adapter." The document has tips on how to maintain your Apple portable's cable and though it features a Magsafe power adapter, I think it still is applicable to iBook and Powerbook adapters.
I advise Apple portable owners to take the time, visit the site, and learn how to take care of your power adapter and avoid damaging the cable.
